When you have dinner or go out to eat, do you eat as much as you can? Do you eat late in the evening then go to bed soon after and worry about heartburn later? How about when you go to a buffet? Just about every one I see at a buffet loads up their plate with more food than they stomach can digest. Undigested food in your stomach is one cause of heartburn. If you get heartburn, then stomach content and HCl acid has flowed back into your esophagus causing you a hot burning sensation. Most people think that if you have heartburn that they have too much acid and that this is the cause of heartburn. The real cause of heartburn is that valve that stops stomach content from moving back into the esophagus has opened up and allowed this content to go back into your esophagus and burn its tissue.
The majority of people with heartburn rush out to the drugstore to buy Tums or other acid neutralizers. Yes this helps heartburn since now the stomach content and acid are now less acidic and burn the esophagus tissue less. Using acid reducers or blockers (drugs) regularly will not stop heartburn and will have a negative impact on your health. Your stomach must have an acid pH of 1.5 to 2.5 to function properly. This acid creates gas and can put pressure on a weak LEV causing it to open. These are just a few heartburn remedies to help you stop heartburn. Your stomach needs a strong acid to digest your food. Are you thirsty? Many people are. It is a fact that most people do not drink enough liquids. The need to hydrate their bodies is the last thing on their minds. Cholesterol is thought to become a problem for people over 40. Although this is not strictly true (as some children and young adults can also have high cholesterol), it is often the consequence of eating the wrong types of foods for many years. Certainly the metabolism has begun to slow down and the person is probably not as active as they used to be. They are probably well advanced in a career and have responsibilities, like a mortgage and children to raise, so it becomes easy to lose focus of their personal wellbeing at the expense of the family. Thus 40 seems to be a good age to start considering personal health issues. This article will cover what high cholesterol is and some foods that prevent high cholesterol.
According to the American Heart Association, normal cholesterol levels should be less than 200mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter of blood). Anything from 200 – 239mg/dl is considered borderline high. Anything over 239mg/dl is considered high. The only way you can determine this level is by having a blood test. Your doctor can administer the blood test and advise you on possible treatment if your numbers are high.

These types of fats are often found in processed foods hence the reason to avoid packaged or processed foods. Fresh foods are best. This applies to meats but more so to vegetables and fruits. You should get as much fresh vegetables as you can. Steaming or boiling is best. This is the basic guideline for a balanced diet that will reduce or at least stabilize your cholesterol level. Soluble fiber which can be found in oatmeal or porridge is thought to be good for reducing cholesterol. It works on two fronts. It prevents the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream. It cannot be completely metabolized by the body and is excreted, however, as it passes through the digestive system it attaches to LDL cholesterol thus helping to reduce the overall reading.
Another product that actively prevents high cholesterol is spreads that contain plant sterols. Plant sterols are the plant equivalent of animal sterols (or cholesterol) so they compete with animal sterols when they are being absorbed into the small intestine. Vegetarians also tend to live longer than non-vegetarians.
Good eating habits throughout life can help to promote physical and mental well-being. For older people, eating right can help to minimize the symptoms of age-related changes that, for some, can cause discomfort or inconvenience. Although the aging process affects some people differently from others, everyone can benefit from exploring a well-planned vegetarian diet.

Recognizing Iron Deficiency Anemia Symptoms in Teens

Teenagers are at a higher risk for iron deficiency anemia due the rapid rate at which they are growing during these years. As the body grows, it requires larger amounts of nutrients, including iron, which it receives from the blood. If the blood is not replenished with iron, anemia can set in. So combine teenage growth spurts with a diet lacking iron-rich foods and you could have a case of teenage anemia to deal with.
There are other risk factors for teenage anemia mostly targeting teenage girls. Teen girls are at a higher risk for anemia since the body loses iron during menstruation and girls usually do not compensate for that loss by eating more iron-rich foods. Anemia is more likely to develop in teen girls who become pregnant also. Lastly, becoming a vegetarian or dieting to lose weight can cause anemia to develop since the present of red meat, which is a prime source of iron, is lacking in these lifestyles.
Symptoms Of Iron Deficiency Anemia
The symptoms of iron deficiency anemia can be mild and hard to notice. Often, if the anemia is mild, there may be no symptoms at all. Even when there are noticeable symptoms, frequently they are dismissed as a bug or even just due to the fact that teens often don't eat as well as they should or sleep as much as they should. The best advice is to watch your teen. If you notice a combination of these symptoms lasting for more than a couple of days, you should schedule a visit with your teen's doctor. The doctor will ask a series of questions to determine whether or not your teen should be tested for anemia. Luckily, a simple blood test is all that is needed to diagnose iron-deficiency anemia.
Treatment For Iron Deficiency Anemia
If your teen is diagnosed as having iron-deficiency anemia, an iron supplement will most likely be prescribed once or twice a day for a time depending on how severe the anemia is. Your doctor may also recommend, and it is a good idea to, making some lifestyle changes involving a healthier diet consisting of dark green vegetables, legumes and small amounts of red meat as well. Your teen should also try hard to get at least eight hours of sleep a night, which is the minimum amount recommended for children growing at the speed that adolescents are. With the proper diet and sleep, as well as the iron supplements, the anemia should subside within a couple of weeks.

Everyone knows fruits and vegetables are healthy for your body, but do you know why? Fruits and vegetables are considered a live whole food when they are uncooked, and live whole foods are an important part of our diets that we may be missing. This article has some information on live whole foods and why they are important.
Live whole foods are plant-based foods that are alive and raw but unheated or uncooked. Which may include beans, fresh juices, nuts, seeds, sprouts, fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes, etc. These raw live whole foods contain a wide range of vital life force nutrients and live enzymes like amino acids, minerals, vitamins, etc.
Many who have been on a raw live food diet have seen great health improvements from eating this way. They have said to have higher energy levels, mental alertness, better digestion and skin appearance. Losing weight can result as well by eating live whole foods.
By this time you may be a little more curious as to what eating live whole foods can do for you, and how safe it would be to go on an all raw food diet.
Before starting any diet you should first talk to your doctor. In my opinion however, I would not suggest going completely on a live whole food diet. It seems to me that by eating this way you would be missing some key vitamins and minerals that you can only get from other kinds of foods like dairy products or meat.
By far one of the best ways to approach any diet is balancing. A healthy well balanced diet with raw foods as your main source of nourishment with plenty of variety seems like your best bet. Try to stay away from processed foods, and go for organic if at all possible.
For most of us, it isn't realistic to be eating a diet composed of all organic live whole foods due to the time, money, and effort it requires. However I do believe that if we include more living foods into our diets, we will feel much healthier. Cutting back on processed foods and replacing them with more fruits and vegetables will greatly increase our general health and nutrition.
To me there is nothing wrong with eating live whole foods, just as long as you are eating a well balanced diet. Organic is always the best way to eat anything, since you are not putting chemicals into your body that don't belong there. That's not always possible as we all know, but if you eat as much organic as you possibly can that's good too.

Healthy Whole Grains

Here's an overview of a whole grain and how they are essential for good health.
A grain is the seed of a plant and a whole grain includes parts known as the germ, endosperm, and bran.
The germ is the part of the grain from which a new plant sprouts, it is the heart of the kernel. It includes some protein, polyunsaturated fat, fiber, and plenty of vitamins and minerals that are good for your body.
The endosperm makes up the majority of the grain kernel. It has small amounts of vitamins and minerals and includes most of the grain's protein.
The bran is the hard outer layer of the seed and is a rich source of dietary fiber. It also includes some starch, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.
Whole Grains Versus Refined
Whole grains have all of these parts still intact. While refined grains have both the bran and the wheat germ removed, leaving only the least nutritious part, the endosperm.
Refined grains (like white flours and white rice) provide poor nutrition, leaving the body still hungry for good nutrition. Although, some of the "vitamins" and "minerals" are added back in after the milling process, nothing artificially added can take place of what was once there naturally. Refined grains are absorbed too quickly into the blood stream causing upsets in blood sugar levels which exhausts the pancreas and/or the adrenal glands. Also, since the bran is taken away during the refining process there is no longer much fiber in the grain either. Our body needs fiber in order to help clean out our intestines, so when refined grains are consumed they act more like glue to your intestines which can cause various health problems.
Whole grains on the other hand, are much different than their refined versions. Whether you like it or not, nutrition is a vital part of our every day lives. Many of us don't regard what we snack on however. This article has a few fundamentals on nutrition that you need think about.

Whole grains are another food that are healthy for your body. Notice I said WHOLE grains. Try to stay away from white-processed flour as there is barely any nutritional value in it. During the grain refining process almost all vitamins and minerals are taken out, as well as much of the fiber. Not to mention the fact that they bleach the flour, which puts chemicals in your body that shouldn't be there! So eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread, and whole rolled oats instead of instant.
Whole fresh fruits are another necessary food group for your general health and nutrition. They contain vitamins and fiber much like veggies do, but fruit is much sweeter which makes them perfect for when your sweet tooth starts acting up.
Another significant part of nutrition is protein. Protein can be found not only in lean meats and nuts, but also in veggies. Go for smaller portions of meats if you desperately have to have it however, and choose leaner meats such as chicken or fish over red meats such as beef.
Dairy is significant to keep in your diet as well. It is one of the major sources of calcium which is significant for keeping your entire body functioning properly. However, you should eat low-fat dairy products to cut down on your fat intake.
Lastly, try to cut out fried foods, processed food, and foods high in saturated fats, sugar, and salt.
Eat a wholesome and healthy diet and you're on your way to better general health and nutrition. No one else can control what goes in your body, so it's up to you. It's easier to do nothing, but you'll thank yourself later if you act on this.

Without enzymes (which have been said to be the catalysts of every chemical reaction in our bodies) energy production cannot happen, the immune system cannot function properly, there can be no cellular division, nor any brain activity. So enzymes are pretty important wouldn't you guess? Which is why live whole foods are better for you.

Cholesterol comes in two major forms and it is important to not only understand the difference between the two forms, but also understand the types of foods that increase "good" cholesterol while lowering "bad" cholesterol. Only through such understanding can you choose a diet that can lower your risk of developing coronary heart disease and help prevent a heart attack or stroke.
HDL versus LDL Cholesterol
Because cholesterol does not dissolve in the blood, it must be transported by lipoproteins to and from the cells within the body. HDL, or "good" cholesterol is high density lipoprotein and it carries up to 1/3 of the blood cholesterol throughout the body. HDL is considered "good" cholesterol because high levels of HDL have been shown to protect against heart disease and heart attack. LDL, on the other hand, is considered to be "bad" cholesterol. When excessive amounts of low density lipoprotein are in the blood, it can accumulate within the inner walls of the arteries over time and form plague that can restrict blood flow through the arteries.
The Sources of Cholesterol
The cholesterol in your bloodstream comes from both the food you eat as well as naturally from your own body. Nearly 75 percent of the cholesterol located in your blood is produced by your liver and other cells within your body while the other 25 percent comes from the food you eat. LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, is produced naturally by the body, but hereditary factors may cause your body to produce too much of the cholesterol. This is why it is important to make healthy dietary choices to better control the 25 percent of cholesterol production that comes from food.
Food to Avoid
Food high in saturated and trans fats: Avoid eating food high in saturated and trans fats. Read food labels to determine the amount of saturated and trans fats they contain. These labels will help you avoid foods high in fat and allow you to choose more healthy alternatives. Also look for foods with the heart-check mark symbol on their label. This label indicates that the food is approved by the American Heart Association as part of a healthy diet.
Whole fat dairy products: Avoid whole fat dairy products such as whole milk, butter, full-fat cheese and yogurt. If possible, replace them with fat-free, reduced-fat or low-fat dairy products.
Foods high in dietary cholesterol: Avoid foods high in dietary cholesterol including whole eggs, shellfish, and organ meats. Replace whole eggs with egg whites and organ meats with lean meats. As a goal, try to limit your intake of cholesterol to less than 300 mg a day.
Foods to Lower "Bad" Cholesterol
Almonds and walnuts: Almonds and walnuts have been shown to lower LDL, or "bad" cholesterol. Just about a handful of almonds or walnuts a days can significantly lower your cholesterol levels while improving the health of your blood vessels.
Foods with soluble fiber: Oatmeal contains soluble fiber that can lower LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, while keeping HDL, or "good" cholesterol, constant. Additional foods containing soluble fiber include apples, pears, barley and rice.
Foods with omega 3 fatty acids: Fish contains omega 3 fatty acids which have been shown to lower LDL while raising HDL cholesterol. Recommended fish with omega 3 fatty acids include salmon, sardines, albacore tuna and mackerel. Food other than fish containing omega 3 fatty acids include canola oil, flaxseed and soybean oil.
Preparing a Diet
Begin by determining your dietary goals. Do you need to lower your cholesterol considerably or only slightly? Do you want to lose weight at the same time as you lower your cholesterol? Will this be a short-term dietary change or a complete lifestyle change?
Only once you know your goals can you properly plan your new diet plan and begin to lower your bad cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease.

Dark chocolate seems to be one of the latest products to hit the "health food"product circuit. The Dove dark chocolate bar and Xocai healthy dark chocolate are just two examples. The battle cry is that dark chocolate is bursting with anti-oxidants that help to prevent heart disease and stroke. Sounds great! Health and Wellness Product investigates!
What are anti-oxidants and do we really need them?
Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals, or by-products, which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as "free radical scavengers" and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals. Health problems such as heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, cancer are all contributed by oxidative damage. Indeed, a recent study conducted by researchers from London found that 5 servings of fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of stroke by 25 percent. Antioxidants may also enhance immune defense and therefore lower the risk of cancer and infection.
Research conducted by scientists from Holland's National Institute of Public Health and Environment shows that chocolates contain antioxidants called Catechins and Phenols. These antioxidants could prevent heart diseases and cancer.
Chocolate is like red wine in that it is said to protect against heart disease and it also contains phenols. These reduce the presence of free radicals that damage cells and DNA. Phenols are said to prevent fat like substances in the blood stream from oxidizing and clogging the arteries.
OK, that sounds pretty important to me. Anti-oxidants are a good thing!
According to the research, dark chocolate, not white chocolate, lowers high blood pressure. This study is from Dirk Taubert, MD, PhD, and his colleagues at the University of Cologne in Germany. Their report appears in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
Taubert's team signed up six men and seven women aged 55-64. All had just been diagnosed with mild high blood pressure -- on average, systolic blood pressure of 153 and diastolic blood pressure of 84.
Every day for two weeks, they ate a candy bar and were asked to balance its 480 calories by not eating other foods similar in nutrients and calories. Half the patients got dark chocolate and half got white chocolate. Those who ate dark chocolate had a significant drop in blood pressure by an average of 5 points for systolic and an average of 2 points for diastolic blood pressure. Those who ate white chocolate did not.
But that is no license to go on a chocolate binge. Eating more dark chocolate can help lower blood pressure, if you've reached a certain age and have mild high blood pressure, say the researchers. But you have to balance the extra calories by eating less of other things.
Chocolate also has not been proven to cause cavities or tooth decay. Rather, it helps to hinder mouth bacteria and stop dental decay.
Research shows that the cocoa butter in the chocolate coats the teeth and may help protect them by preventing plaque from forming. The sugar in the chocolate does contribute to cavities, but no more than the sugar in any other food. Scientists believe that the antibacterial agents in the cocoa beans help to offset its high sugar levels. Go figure!
The studies seem to show that dark chocolate does indeed help boost the immune system and therefore help in the prevention of cancer and other immune system problems. In addition, cardiac and stroke chances are decreased by the anti-oxidant benefit of this tasty treat.
So, it would seem that dark chocolate has the research behind it to actually call itself "healthy". Eaten in moderation, with other nutrient rich foods in your diet it can not only be a benefit to your health, but certainly an enjoyable addition!

Are Soft Drinks Bad for You?
By Dave Jackson You probably don't want to hear facts and figures. Can't someone just tell me that soft drinks are bad because they cause too much gas or have some terrible acid that will eat my insides? Well if they did say that, would it wean you off your favorite beverage? Maybe - but unless you feel some strange effects - you're not going to change.
Studies have shown us that drinking soda before we go to bed may cause acid reflux. So if you don't drink it right before bed, you'll be fine - right? Not exactly. Data (and I know you don't want numbers) showed that a quarter of the 15 thousand patients surveyed reported heartburn problems when sleeping. Those who drank pop during the day increased their risk of developing acid reflux at night.
So why do soft drinks have such a bad effect on you? Two elementary reasons - most carbonated drinks are extremely acidic. And, drinking them forces your body to consume carbon dioxide - which causes acid reflux. Once you have acid reflux, these same studies have shown that the sleep medications, Ativan, Valium, Xanax, and Halcion, aggravate the problem. You may have to switch.
GERD, gastro-esophageal reflux disease) is so common to us in America, it's a pity. Only the top pharmaceutical companies are getting good out of the condition. But simply avoiding a soft drink at night may not be the solution. To ask if soft drinks are bad for me is a good question - but when you already have heartburn it may be the less of two evils. Some people think that GERD is normal and that getting on medication is the solution. But that's like saying if you're deficient in asprin - you'll be prone to headaches.
If you are suffering from reflux or heartburn, something is causing that and medicines like Prilosec and Nexium, or H2 Blockers like Tagamet or Zantac, is not addressing the cause. It just makes sense to do everything you can to find the cause and try to stop it. If you don't, you wind up on medication and the consequences of that, or untreated acid reflux, which may cause cancer.
Acid in this case, may actually be the solution - not the problem. The body is producing the acid as a way of solving something totally out of balance. One research shows eating more protein and less carbohydrates does help. Others suggest a low-grain diet and metabolic typing. And as always, curtailing sugar intake and supplementing with vitamin D and garlic seems to work for most people with GERD.
If you are on a proton pump inhibitor like Prilosec or Nexium, you know you can't just stop them cold turkey. One of the complaints is that they do make you dependent. So soft drinks can be bad and can lead to acid reflux. Whether that is worth the pain is up to you.

Merriam-Webster defines whole food as a "natural food, especially when grown organically." Whole foods are "real" foods, complete with all the nutrients and other important compounds nature intended that have not been highly processed, synthesized, or irradiated. Whole foods are foods in their most complete, balanced state and do not contain harmful chemicals and additives that damage our bodies. Additionally, whole foods are foods that are unprocessed and unrefined; or processed and refined as little as possible before being consumed. Whole foods are also remarkable for what they don't have, including added sugar, salt, fat, or chemicals. Whole foods are able to be digested easily and provide all the nutrients our bodies need.
A great characteristic of whole foods is that they are easily assimilated and absorbed readily by the body, much better than any traditional nutrient supplements. Whole foods are always better than processed foods, which are usually stripped of their vitamins and minerals. Whole foods are nutrient rich and promote great health, and are the best sources for vitamins and minerals. Whole foods are complex, containing a variety of micronutrients the body needs. The bottom line is that whole foods are the most nutritionally balanced foods you can obtain, as close to nature as you can get.
